One of the joys of living in London is having everything on your doorstep. Lots of my friends, neighbours and colleagues have been moving to Walthamstow lately, so I wanted to understand the hype.
As a foodie and a coffee/matcha lover, I did the classic TikTok research followed by a proper walk round the area — and I can confirm Walthamstow is a genuine foodie hotspot. Residents here are spoilt for choice when it comes to brunch and coffee. Here are my top finds.
1. Narrative Café Right next to Blackhorse Road station, this spot was perfect for a quick pre-commute coffee. The flat white was creamy and an easy 10/10 — potentially the best coffee in Walthamstow (big statement, I know). The interior is minimalist and chic, and they also serve a selection of bagels and pastries.
2. Weirdough Bakery Some people say this is one of the best bakeries in London. This cute little bakery does great coffees, and if you fancy a sweet treat — or even a focaccia sandwich for lunch — they have some gorgeous options. The oat milk flat white was £4, the vibes are cool, and there's indoor and outdoor seating. FYI, it does get busy!
3. Ruttle & Rowe Tucked inside St Mary's church! This cosy coffee shop is perfect for an Italian-style espresso stop, or a pastry-and-a-good-book kind of morning. Indoor and outdoor seating again, and it's great for friends, a solo date, or just grabbing your favourite coffee. They roast their own beans and source them ethically — dog friendly too.
4. LONG & SHORT Based in the St James crate food market, the staff here had brilliant knowledge on their coffee. The iced coffee was excellent — not too bitter or acidic, just perfect. At £4.60 it's on the pricier side, but if you love quality coffee, this is the place for you.
5. Haven Coffee Check out this refugee-supporting café. A sweet spot for a great coffee in support of a great cause.

1. Dudley's Dudley's is super hyped on socials, and it certainly lives up to it. It's quirky with some gorgeous food options — and the crumpets were a 10/10.
2. The Good Egg Tucked inside the iconic Eat 17 on Orford Road in Walthamstow Village, The Good Egg is a Middle Eastern-inspired brunch institution. Their old Soho spot had a serious following, so locals were thrilled when they landed in E17. The za'atar fried chicken pita and the shakshuka are what everyone talks about, and the babka French toast is pure indulgence. It's snug inside with cosy booths, but the real secret is the little walled garden out back — a proper suntrap for a slow weekend brunch. Walk-ins only and it does fill up, so get there early. Not the cheapest, but worth it for a treat.
3. One For The Table A lovely new independent café just moments from Walthamstow Central. It's exactly what a neighbourhood spot should be — great coffee, delicious food and a genuinely warm, welcoming feel where everyone's made at home. Perfect for an easy weekend catch-up or a solo coffee and a slow morning. Definitely one to watch.
4. Meli-Melo A little gem on Hoe Street — a French bistro-café from chef Florent Fabulas, with a fully halal menu. Think proper French comfort cooking without the pretension: the "Full English 2.0" and French toast, plus burgers, wings and tacos when you fancy something heartier. As a coffee and matcha lover, I was very happy here — and yes, you absolutely need to order the caramel & cornflake churros. Cosy, warm-lit and family friendly.
5. NOUR Saving a showstopper for last. NOUR on Hoe Street is the more refined, dressed-up end of the Walthamstow brunch scene — a gorgeous cream-and-gold room, complete with a water feature (very TikTok famous). It's home to the viral "split" drink, coffee and matcha in one cup, which is basically a matcha lover's dream, and the strawberry matcha is a must. On the food front, the harissa chicken schnitzel, oak-smoked brisket and garlic labneh are all stars — but the kunafa molten cookie completely stole the show. It's popular and gets busy, so book ahead.

The hype is real. Whether you're after your perfect flat white, a matcha with a view, or a lazy weekend brunch with friends, Walthamstow genuinely delivers — and it's all right on The Altham's doorstep.
